Adrian Moseley

My first flight was to Dallas, somewhere around five years old. It was the first of a lot of them. That's roughly forty-four years of traveling out of nearly fifty — which I owe to a parent who made sure I saw things, and to a wife and kids who keep pushing us further out.

Travel has never just been a hobby for me. It's research, curiosity, and discovery: comparing routes, working out which hotels are worth it and which neighborhoods to stay in, and finding the food and the places that make a city worth the flight in the first place.

1. Starting at age 5

   A flight to Dallas

   Then a childhood of it — Disney World in Orlando, Disneyland in Los Angeles, New Orleans. Some kids get one big trip. I got a nurturing parent who kept putting me on planes.

2. College

   I walked into Mexico

   My first time out of the country was on foot, across the border. No resort, no tour, no plan. That's still the version of travel I like best. An internship program took me to Denver in the same years.

3. Young adult

   The U.S., properly

   Detroit and Ann Arbor in Michigan, and Dallas.

4. Then

   Our first cruise out of the country

   Cozumel and Playa del Carmen, with the family. For a lot of my clients this is exactly the rung they're standing on now, which is why I never talk anyone out of starting there.

5. Since

   Further out, as a family

   Bangkok and Phuket, Tokyo, Ecuador, Montego Bay, Nassau, Manila, Da Nang and Ho Chi Minh City, Sydney, Accra, London, Prague, Vienna, Panama City and San Carlos, Mexico City down to Tampico, and Barbados — my wife and I, with our two oldest for the early years and our youngest now that they've left home. Closer to home in the same stretch: Atlanta, Seattle, New York, Nashville, Indianapolis, Chicago, Pittsburgh, New Orleans twice more, and road trips all over Texas.

Written out like that it looks like I'm keeping score. I'm not — it's just the honest answer to "have you actually been there?"

Over the years, friends, family, and colleagues started asking for my advice on their trips. I helped them sort through options, identify better hotel locations, find activities they would not have discovered on their own, and avoid the kinds of planning mistakes that often do not show up until you are already traveling. Eventually it made sense to turn that into something more structured.

I'm also not working from a brochure. My wife has been to places I haven't —Hyderabad, Jakarta, South Africa, Kenya— and I'm mentored through Go Global Vacations by advisors who have been to the rest. When you ask me what a destination is really like, the answer usually comes from someone who has actually stood there.

A lot of my job happens before you book. One client is taking her first international trip, to South Africa, and asked for an all-inclusive arrangement of a kind that isn't really how things work there. The work was telling her that honestly, up front, and rebuilding the trip around what the place actually offers — so she isn't disappointed when she lands. No booking site is going to do that for you.

Home base is Austin, Texas, and I work with travelers nationwide. Planning happens over phone, email, and text, so where you live never limits where you can go. I'm affiliated with InteleTravel, which is what gives me supplier relationships and booking tools behind the scenes.
