My wife and I stayed at a Sandals in Barbados. The resort served steak, burgers, hot dogs and French food — not one Bajan dish. So we left the property. We ate roti and fish cakes, found the beef macaroni, went to the Oistins Fish Fry on a Friday night with everybody else, circled the island, and rode the local bus. A 9-out-of-10 trip became an 11. Other guests never went past the gate, because everything outside it felt unfamiliar.
